Did the young man speak English?

Text 課文

I had an amusing experience last year. After I had left a small village in the south of France, I drove on to the next town. On the way, a young man waved to me. I stopped and he asked me for a lift. As soon as he had got into the car, I said good morning to him in French and he replied in the same language. Apart from a few words, I do not know any French at all. Neither of us spoke during the journey. I had nearly reached the town, when the young man suddenly said, very slowly, "Do you speak English?' As I soon learnt, he was English himself!

Text notes

  1. After I had left a small village in the south of France, I drove on to the next town.
    1. in the south of 在法國南部。 e.g. Beijing is in south of China. Japan is to the east of China. Russia is on the north of China.
e.g. He talked on until everybody had gone. How much longer will this weather go on?
  2. I stopped and he asked me for a lift.
    1. ask sb. for a lift 向某人要求搭便車去某地,相當於 thumb a lift to somewhere 或 hitchhike to somewhere。
  3. Apart from a few words, I do not know any French at all.
    1. apart from 除瞭……之外。近義詞辨析 apart from, except, except for, except that, but, other than, besides, in addition to:
e.g. You can all go except Tom. Except for Tom, you can all go. I feel all right except for a slight headache.
e.g. I would like to go with you except that it is too far.
but 常用於all,no,nobody,who等詞之後,但不能用於句首。e.g. I had nothing left but ten dollars. He had no choice but/other than to wait.
      4. besides = in addition to 表示“除…… e.g. Besides/In addtion to John, all of us passed the exam. He can play football besides/in addtion to tennis.
e.g. Apart from his face and hands, he broke both legs. Apart from a bit too long, the play was very good.
  4. Neither of us spoke during the journey.
e.g. Either of you answers the question. Both of the films are interesting.

Grammer notes

結構:had + done(past participle過去分詞)。
    1. 表示過去某時或某動作發生之前已經完成的動作或狀態,常與after, before, when,as,as soon as,no…until,by等引導的時間狀語連用。e.g. As soon as the sun had set, the old man returned to the hotel. When he had finished the lunch, he asked a glass of water.
e.g. I didn't know he had moved out. They returned earlier than we had expected.
      1. 在“It was the first time…”後面。e.g. It was the first time he had gone abroad. It was the first time Tom had broken a world record.
      2. 在“no sooner…than…,hardly/scarcely…when…” e.g. He had no sooner returned than he bought a house. We had hardly begun when we were told to stop.
e.g. Take good care of yourself.
e.g. Stress itself is not an illness, but prolonged stress can lead to sickness and abscence from work.
e.g. He saw Tom himself.
e.g. I went there by myself.
e.g. The door opened of itself.
